Thomas N. Gambrell, 52, of Petoskey, died April 26, 1999, at Northern Michigan Hospital.
Tom was born March 12, 1947, in Oxford, Ind., son of Bates and Mary (Winkleman) Gambrell. Â Tom grew up in Lafayette, Ind., then moved to Traverse City and attended school and graduated from Traverse City High School. Â He then attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, receiving his bachelor's degree in education. Â He also attended insurance school at Michigan State University, where he received his insurance certificate. Â He also attended Life Underwriters Training Council. Â Tom was a certified counselor and licensed insurance counselor.
Tom moved to Petoskey in 1971, and was employed as night supervisor at Giant.  He also traveled and helped open various Giant stores  In 1979, he went to work for Farm Bureau as an insurance agent.  He also served on the Petoskey City Police Auxiliary from 1977-1982.
Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Â Tom was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Â He loved Star Trek movies and dogs.
He was member of Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
He is survived by his wife Leslie, two daughters: Kim (Andy) Fryczynski of Petoskey, Heather Gambrell of Portage, Mich.; his mother, Mary Gambrell; two stepchildren; Angela Furgeson of Petoskey, Tod Furgeson of Levering; grandchild, Kayla Fryczynski; and two step grandchildren, Sara Furgeson and Samantha Furgeson; sister Judy (Burt) Maier of Coupeville, Wash.; two nieces and one nephew; also numerous brothers-and sisters-in-law. Â Tom was preceded in death by his father in 1985.
Tom's funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at Stone Funeral Home, Petoskey. Â The Rev. David Behling officiated. Â Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Â Memorial contributions were directed to the family. Â [more]
